37 Years = A Deserved Retirement

1982. I was 28 and working for Kinetico Water Treatment in Newbury, OH. Part of my job was being part of a team that sought out new franchisees.

I remember going to Kansas City and having a room set for 75 prospects. Two guys in their 50s, wearing bib overalls, came in and sat down. That was all who attended? Needless to say they were not the entrepreneurs we were searching for.

Milwaukee was different. We met Bob Richter there. Bob was young - under 30 - aggressive, and an ideal candidate. Last week Bob sold his Kinetico franchise after 37 successful years.

My relationship with Bob goes back all those year. From a corporate guy watching this young, innovative, franchisee grow . . . to joining him and moving to Milwaukee . . . to moving on while still considering him one of my closest friends.

To say we want through a great deal is an understatement! Divorces, marriages, hiring, firings, grand kids, and a plethora of memories that bring back so many smiles - along with some "did we really do that?" thoughts. Personally, I look at Bob as one of the most progressive businessmen I have ever met.

Bob never looked at the status quo. He dreamed of "what could be",, then set his mind on accomplishing them. I was with him when he purchased a retail location in a prime spot in Waukesha, WI. That building has served as his headquarters for over 25 years. One of the stylish retail operations I've ever visited. Whatever Bob touched had a stroke of class.

.When he shared with me that he was ready to retire I was excited for him. All of those years of hard work were paying off. I believe one of the reasons for his success was his dogged determination to do what others wouldn't ever do. He relied on his personal efforts in everything he did, never being one who looked at what others could do for him. In the world of franchising this can be unique.

I had a chance to see Bob and play golf with him a couple weeks ago. He hasn't changed over the years except becoming more passionate on helping others. Bob has always been good for a joke and a laugh, also for ideas on how to help anyone in their business.

This is a lesson for us all. I love the quotes by President Kennedy, "Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly." As well as, "Things do not happen. They are made to happen."

Lots of Leadership lessons over the years here. Being part of the journey is one I will never forget. The friendship I will always treasure! Congrats to Bob and all others who are achieving their dreams because they made things happen!
